Case Study: Electronic Health Records
The Challenge: A leading regional hospital was looking for a way to help its patients better manage their healthcare. Media Lantern was called upon to recommend and implement an appropriate solution to meet the hospital's current goals. A key secondary requirement was to select a modular solution that could grow as patient acceptance and usage increased.
Media Lantern evaluated the free Electronic Health Record offerings some vendors have announced, but although these look promising, they were not yet ready for prime-time use by the hospital due to privacy concerns and lack of desired functionality. Commercial offerings were more promising, but were also expensive and provided more features than the hospital required at first.
The Solution: To provide a solution that met all the hospital's requirements, Media Lantern developed a custom Electronic Health Record module that integrated with the hospital's Web site, giving patients a consistent look and feel to their interaction with the hospital. Patients can track prescription and over-the-counter medications, scheduled doctor's visits, and logs of general health data such as weight and blood pressure.
Printable versions offer a convenient take-away to give to doctors that provide a one-page summary of the patient's condition, streamlining visits. Future phases will integrate the system with the hospital's event tracking facilities, allowing patients to sign up for and track scheduled events. Future plans also include integration with the hospital's billing system.
