Daylight Commander

Google Photos extension

The Google Photos rescue works through a small companion extension in Chrome, Brave, or Edge. Setting it up takes about a minute.

Google's Photos API can't download or delete items, so the extension drives the large photos and videos view in your browser and hands the work to Daylight Commander. It does nothing on its own, and its source is on GitHub.

Set it up

  1. Download the extension and unzip it.
  2. Move the daylight-commander-extension folder somewhere it can stay, such as your Documents folder, since the browser loads the extension from there.
  3. Open brave://extensions, chrome://extensions, or edge://extensions, and turn on Developer mode.
  4. Click Load unpacked and choose that folder.
  5. In Daylight Commander, press Command-Shift-P and copy the pairing token.
  6. Open photos.google.com in a tab.
  7. Click the extension's icon, paste the token, and press Pair.
  8. Click Go to large items, then Scan library to list the items the extension can see.
  9. Back in Daylight Commander, open photos:// in a panel, then copy items (F5) or move them (F6) into a folder in the other panel.

Copying leaves the original in Google Photos. Moving sends the original to Google Photos' trash once its copy is downloaded and checked.

Updating

To update, download the new zip, load the new folder the same way, and remove the old one from the extensions page. Chromium browsers also show a notice about developer mode extensions when they start, which you can dismiss.

Scanning again

Google shows a limited number of items in the large photos and videos view. As you clear space, scan again and the list in Daylight Commander updates.
